The SanRemo SpeedSuit, jersey-and-shorts combo, effectively enables riders to wear a skinsuit in road races and thus gain an aerodynamic advantage. Testing shows that at 40km/h, the jersey saves between twelve and fifteen watts of energy when compared to a standard clothing combination. It is, it says, worth 45 seconds in time savings. Congratulations to Johan Van Summeren for netting the Sanremo Speedsuit’s first victory on the roads to Roubaix in 2011.

TEAM GARMIN-BARRACUDA UNVEIL 2012 TEAM KIT

Slipstream Sports unveils 2012 team kit and new sponsor. The 2012 team jersey and shorts retain the distinctive Garmin logo while adding the Barracuda logo, and the signature Slipstream Sports argyle is prominently displayed.

The changes to the 2012 kit are more than cosmetic. The Castelli Speed Research Unit has done its part to make sure the riders have the most comfortable and technically advanced clothing for racing in extreme conditions, from the cold spring classics to the heat of France in July.

LIGHTWEIGHT AND VERSATILE ALL-WEATHER PROTECTION

The Gabba WS Rain Jersey is either the most specialized cycling top on the market, or the most versatile. After several weeks of testing, I’m leaning toward versatile. It’s not a jacket, with half-length sleeves. But it’s not quite a jersey, either, with four-way stretch Windstopper X-Lite Plus fabric that’s burlier than any jersey.

It’s windproof and, says Castelli, waterproof. Windstopper’s maker, W.L. Gore, shies away from calling anything waterproof that can’t pass stringent rain chamber and water column tests. But Castelli is serious about the water thing, even building grommeted drain holes into the three rear pockets.
